The place
The place where Mugaritz is currently located was long ago surrounded by a huge oak wood. There are not many oak woods of this size any more. One of the oaks, which is "200 years old", is catalogued because of its important value. This oak rises up just few metres away from our kitchen, as the guard of the Otzazulueta farm and being the mute witness of its history.
Mugaritz was opened in march 1998. It is located in the countryside, surrounded by fields, forests, baserris that allow to breathe a peaceful and natural atmosphere. Mugaritz has been designed respecting the surroundings and integrating the expressions of our interests. Differents plastic artists have collaborated with us, incorporating works that merge discreetly with Mugaritz’s space.
¿Why it is called Mugaritz? In the past a huge oak wood sourrended the restaurant. Nowadays there are few of them. One of those oaks is “200 years old” and it is catalogued because of its important value. This oak rises up just few metres away from our kitchen, as the guard of the Otzazulueta farm and being the mute witness of its history.
Our haritza (oak in Basque), is strategically situated beside the line dividing Errenteria and Astigarraga. Thus, this tree delimitates the muga (frontier) between both towns. Muga eta haritza. Mugaritz.
