The craftsmen of the Basque Country draw on a long typographic tradition of carving in stone,
where strokes are blunt and somewhat crude because of the tools used and the difficulty of working the stone.
The 'kai' typeface, which was created for Mugaritz by Santos Bregaña, reinterprets the writings that can still be seen above the lintels of traditional Basque houses alluding to the shepherds, hunters, fishermen and farmers that shape the collective memory of the Basque people.
